Olympian inspires Saints

The Sherwood Saints received some inspiration last week as they fight for a playoff spot in public high school girls hockey.
Coach Annemaree Peters brought Olympic gold medalist Becky Kellar to the Inch Park arena to show her team their hockey program is just as important as the school’s renowned boys program.
“There’s a perception at our school that boys hockey is the pinnacle and it’s a perception that’s not reality,” said Peters.
“The boys pay a lot more so they get buses to games, they get practiced jerseys. So they’re financing it, but the perception is they get more than any other team.
“I just wanted to show the girls that perception isn’t reality, that they are just as important and they are important to the school.”
Kellar spent 90 minutes on the ice running drills and showing the players how to pick up their game a notch or two, then held a 30-minute session in the dressing room where the girls could ask questions.
“With her knowledge and experience, even if the girls just take one or two things from her it’s something I think they’ll carry forward,” said Peters.
The players, who are in the home stretch of their season and competing for a playoff spot, were impressed.
Rachel MacLeod, an assistant captain with the team, said the team learned a lot in the session.
“It was an amazing experience,” she said.
“I never thought I would be playing hockey with an Olympic athlete.”
